Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, is scheduled to appear in federal court in Wilmington, Delaware, this Tuesday to be arraigned on firearms charges, a case brought by special prosecutor David Weiss.
The hearing, while a procedural part of any criminal case, will mark an unprecedented moment as it is the first time that the son of a sitting president will appear in court to fight criminal charges.
Likewise, Hunter Biden’s appearance occurs in the midst of a recent investigation launched against the Democratic president for allegedly benefiting from his son’s businesses abroad, although the Republican Party has not provided direct evidence that the US executive has benefited financially. of his firstborn’s career.
Hunter Biden was charged with lying on federal firearms forms and illegal possession of a weapon while using illegal drugs, CNN reported.
The charges come after a plea deal was reached between Hunter Biden and federal prosecutors for allegedly failing to pay millions of dollars in taxes that later fell apart in a hearing before a different federal judge in Delaware, who put such pressure on Justice Department prosecutors as the president’s son’s defense team over the scope of the agreement and its constitutionality.
At the hearing, Judge Christopher Burke will present Hunter Biden with the charges he faces and he will have the opportunity to formally plead not guilty, in addition, prosecutors may request that some conditions be established for his release while he awaits trial.
For his part, the lawyer of the Democratic president’s son. Abbe Lowell said in a statement when the indictment against her client was announced, “possessing an unloaded gun for 11 days was not a threat to public safety, but a prosecutor, with all the power imaginable, bowing to political pressure presents a serious problem and threat to our justice system.”
