Laphonza Butler was sworn in as California state senator, marking a significant milestone in American politics and diversity. Appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom to finish the late Dianne Feinstein’s term, Butler became the first openly lesbian African American to serve in the Senate.
The swearing-in ceremony, an event loaded with symbolism, was led by Vice President Kamala Harris.
“As you take on this role, I know you will work to serve Californians with courage and grace, as you have done throughout your career,” the vice president wrote in X.
Before Butler’s inauguration, Governor Newsom highlighted his career in defending the rights of the LGBTQ and African American communities.
At a time when, according to the governor, rights face significant challenges, he emphasized the relevance of his election and noted the importance of combating attempts to roll back equality and inclusion.
Newsom praised Laphonza Butler in a statement issued Oct. 1, highlighting her commitment as an advocate for women and girls, a second-generation fighter for working people, and a trusted advisor to Vice President Harris. She stressed that Butler represents the best of California and its progressive values.
Historical appointment
Butler’s appointment as interim senator is historic for several reasons.
In addition to being the only African-American woman currently serving in the California Senate, she is only the third African-American woman to hold this position in U.S. history, following in the footsteps of Senator Carol Moseley Braun and Vice President Kamala Harris. She stands out even more as she is the first openly LGBTQ+ senator to represent California.
In response to his nomination, Laphonza Butler expressed his honor and determination in his X account. While she acknowledged the impossibility of matching Senator Dianne Feinstein’s legacy, she pledged to honor her leadership and work tirelessly for women, workers, unions, struggling parents, and all Californians.
The appointment of Laphonza Butler received praise from many voices, including Stacey Abrams, a member of the Democratic Party. Abrams praised Butler as a tireless advocate for women, workers, the disadvantaged and “all those seeking a better life.” She highlighted the importance of power sharing and stated that Butler is the right choice at the right time.
Butler also received criticism. According to the allegations, the now senator from California is registered to vote in Maryland and maintains a residence there, which is why she should be disqualified from representing California.
However, Governor Newsom defended her by ensuring that she has a duly registered house in California.
According to the California Secretary of State’s office, by maintaining a home in Southern California, Butler meets the requirements to represent the state in the Senate.
Trajectory
Laphonza Butler has dedicated his life to politics and advocacy. Her experience as a community organizer, political and operational consultant over the years has established her as a leading figure within her party.
For the past three years, she led EMILY’s List, an influential Democratic super PAC in Washington, DC, dedicated to supporting women seeking election to public office.
