Antony Blinken, Secretary of State of the United States, stated this Tuesday that stopping fentanyl trafficking and resolving the migration crisis on the border is also Mexico’s responsibility.
The head of US diplomacy made these statements during a talk at Rice University in Houston, the day before traveling to Mexico to discuss drug trafficking and migration issues with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
“The relationship with our neighbor is possibly the most important one we have because of the impact it has on the lives of our citizens in many good ways, but also with many challenges,” he declared.
Among them, Blinken cited drug trafficking and the immigration crisis, but also American weapons that are trafficked to Mexico and end up in the hands of organized crime.
For the Secretary of State, Washington and Mexico have the “responsibility to work together to deal with these challenges” given that the problems on the border “are not a one-way street, but a two-way street.”
“With my own experience, I can say that the cooperation we have with Mexico has never been so strong before”
The official admitted that it is still insufficient to resolve all the challenges.
Blinken will travel to Mexico on Wednesday for a two-day visit in which he will meet with López Obrador and other authorities for the High-Level Dialogue on Security.
Joe Biden’s Administration wants Mexico to extradite more drug traffickers and dismantle more clandestine laboratories of fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid that has caused record numbers of overdose deaths in the United States.
