One of the most notable transfers in the summer of 2003 was that of David Beckham from Manchester United to Real Madrid. In that transaction, the Spanish team paid close to $40 million dollars for the English midfielder.
However, for Beckham this transfer was somewhat traumatic. Well, the 27-year-old player at that time did not want to leave his native England. And recently in a documentary, he told everything he tried to do to stay in Manchester.
‘Can I talk to the boss?’ asked Beckham as soon as he found out that he would be transferring to Real Madrid. The player was trying to change the board’s mind. However, when he asked him, the answer was: “No, he doesn’t want to talk to you.”
Beckham continued telling how he even begged to speak with the leadership to make them see reason and not transfer him. “I need to talk to the boss, I need to know that this is really what he wants, for me to leave. I begged him not to let me leave, but I couldn’t get in touch with him,” explained the now co-owner of Inter Miami.
When asking Beckham if he ever wanted to leave Manchester United, the Briton was blunt and replied: “No, never.” Currently David even continues to attend some matches of the “Red” team and it is clearly the team of which he is a fan.
Beckham’s visit to the Spanish capital
Beckham spent four seasons at Real Madrid. In that period he played 159 games, scored 20 goals and distributed 59 assists. In addition to winning a Spanish league.
After a spell at Milan on loan, Beckham arrived at the Los Angeles Galaxy where he would begin his path in the MLS to today become the owner of the franchise in which the Argentine star Lionel Messi plays.
