A man who fled with a child in the back seat of a stolen vehicle in Connecticut crashed the car and died, but the good news is that the 17-month-old child survived.

According to the WFSB channel, which cited a police report, on Wednesday, around 9:10 a.m., a subject stole a car from St. Gabriel School in Windsor with the child in the back seat.

However, some time later police received a 911 call reporting that the Windsor Federal Savings Bank on Broad St. had been robbed, authorities said, NBC Connecticut added.

Police later received a report about a car that had crashed into a tree at Windsor Ave. and Hillcrest Rd, according to the outlet; Officials realized the three incidents were related, the Hartford Courant reported.

“Further investigation revealed that the deceased operator stole the unattended vehicle in front of St. Gabriel School, stopped at the Windsor Federal Savings Bank on Broad Street, entered and robbed the bank, then fled the scene in the stolen vehicle and was involved in “The single-vehicle car accident with the child still inside the stolen vehicle,” said Windsor Police Lt. Nicholas Dally, WSFB reports.

The driver died at the scene, according to the NBC Connecticut report. Police have not yet released the name of the deceased driver.

“The child who was in the back seat of the vehicle was awake and responsive at the scene,” Dally said, WFSB reports. “The mother was taken to the scene and accompanied the child to Connecticut Children’s (Medical Center) for evaluation and treatment.”
