The Attorney General of Venezuela, Tarek William Saab, has revealed that the Public Ministry has issued an arrest warrant against Juan Guaidó, former president of Parliament, who has been in exile in the United States since April.
Guaidó faces a variety of charges, including money laundering, treason, usurpation of functions and more, according to the newspaper Voz América.
In addition to the arrest warrant, Saab announced that three prosecutors assigned to the case will request a red alert from Interpol, seeking the extradition of Guaidó to face these charges. The charges against Guaidó stem from his time as head of Venezuela’s “interim government.”
Juan Guaidó: Accusations and allegations
Saab exposed the accusations against Guaidó, stating that he used the platform of the “interim government” to cause significant losses to the Venezuelan State, estimated at $19 billion dollars. The prosecutor also referred to a court ruling in the United States that indicated that Guaidó had accessed assets of PDVSA subsidiaries in the United States to finance himself.
This marks a significant legal advance in the current political turmoil in Venezuela. While Guaidó has not responded directly to these accusations, he has shared an article on social media analyzing his defense of Citgo, a PDVSA subsidiary in the United States, during his tenure as head of the interim government.
The arrest warrant against Guaidó adds another layer of complexity to the political situation in Venezuela and the international community’s response to it.
