MIAMI – Philippe became a post-tropical cyclone this Friday, but it will still produce intense rains this weekend in New York, the New England region of the United States and southeastern Canada, where flash floods could also be recorded, the Center reported National Hurricane Center (NHC) of the United States.

Philippe has maximum sustained winds of 50 miles per hour (85 km) and may strengthen slightly in the coming days, according to the latest NHC bulletin dedicated to this system, issued at 11:00 local time (15:00 GMT) today.

At that time, the center of Philippe was located about 110 miles (180 km) south of the Bermuda Islands, in the waters of the North Atlantic and where public schools remain closed this Friday.

In this British island territory, rain is expected to gradually decrease over the course of today; However, rainfall of up to 3 inches (76 millimeters) will still be recorded.

The system is moving toward the north-northeast with a speed of 16 miles per hour (26 km/h) and, according to a probable trajectory pattern, the center of Philippe will pass near Bermuda on Friday afternoon.

Later, between Saturday night and Sunday Philippe will reach the New England region of the United States and Atlantic Canada, where there are forecasts of rain of up to 5 inches (130 millimeters), which entails the risk of flash flooding, he warned. the NHC, based in Miami, Florida.

Philippe, which made landfall on Monday night on the island of Barbuda and whose winds knocked down trees and light poles on some islands in the Lesser Antilles, will leave rain and winds felt until Sunday.

In an update released last August, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicted an “above normal” Atlantic hurricane season, with the formation of between 14 and 21 tropical storms, of which between 6 and 11 would be hurricanes.

In the current season, which ends on November 30, 17 tropical storms and 6 hurricanes have formed, and one of them, Lee, reached category 5, the maximum on the Saffir-Simpson intensity scale.
