Anthony Cherestal was extradited from the Dominican Republic to New York, where he was wanted on suspicion of deliberately running over a man in 2010.

Cherestal, currently 46, was captured this week in his native country, extradited to New York and charged with the death of Ernice Auguste (52) in Brooklyn, reported New YorkPost.

According to the NYPD, the two men were involved in a heated argument on Foster Avenue in the East Flatbush neighborhood on September 3, 2010, and Cherestal drove his car onto the sidewalk, allegedly fatally struck Auguste, and then fled.

The injured man was taken by paramedics to NYC Health and Hospitals/Kings County, where he died two weeks later. Cherestal and Auguste did not know each other and it is unclear what led to the argument, according to authorities.

All charges are mere accusations and those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

Extreme violence over traffic disputes is common in New York. Last month an aspiring model teacher was shot to death in the head in a Home Depot parking lot in Brooklyn.

In August, a 40-year-old Dominican father was shot and killed when a crash turned violent on the Cross Bronx Expressway.

In January, an argument at a gas station in Upper Manhattan sparked a chain-reaction crash that sent a car hurtling into a restaurant window, injuring about 20 diners.

Last year William Peralta Díaz was stabbed to death after an argument over a crash in the Bronx. He was the second Hispanic killed in NYC after a traffic argument in less than two weeks: days before, a 30-year-old father was shot and killed by a driver after the two collided on a Brooklyn street.

Previously, at least two other Hispanics had already died in the middle of traffic disputes in New York: the drug trafficker Albert “Alpo” Martínez (55) in Harlem and Aracellio Pellot (46) in the Bronx.

In November 2022, a man was sentenced to 40 years to life in prison after he stabbed two people and ran over five pedestrians, killing a friend of his, during an argument over a parking spot in Queens.

In July 2022, a Hispanic man was shot dead while working parking duties in Brooklyn for “Law & Order,” a legendary TV series about crime.

Previously, in March 2022, a 43-year-old man was fatally shot in his building after an apparent dispute over a parking spot in Brooklyn. In December 2021 in that same county, a 63-year-old man was found unconscious with head trauma and police suspect that he was fatally beaten in a dispute over a double-parked car.
