Kevin McCarthy said he does not contemplate resigning as a congressman after he was removed this week from the presidency of the United States House of Representatives.

“I’m not going to resign. I will be there for the entire mandate. “I have a lot more to do,” the Republican told reporters at the Capitol.

McCarthy announced that next year he will seek to renew his seat as representative of California’s 20th district and expand the majority that Republicans have in the Lower House.

The Republican was removed on Tuesday, October 3, as president of the United States House of Representatives after a resolution was approved in retaliation for his “hidden negotiations” with Democrats to prevent the government shutdown.

Trumpist Matt Gaetz introduced the resolution a day earlier, which had 216 votes in favor and 210 against. And Patrick McHenry, representative of North Carolina’s 10th district, took over as acting speaker of the United States House of Representatives.

Gaetz expressed on the program State of the Union on Sunday that it was necessary to continue with new leadership that would generate trust, but McCarthy downplayed those statements: “Go ahead!” he challenged. “I will survive,” said the now former president of the United States House of Representatives.

The chairman of the Judiciary Committee, Jim Jordan, and Steve Scalise, who is taking on that challenge while being treated for blood cancer, have officially run for the position.

“They are both good friends of mine. I have spoken to both of them,” McCarthy said of them this Friday.

An analysis published by the EFE news agency indicates that the dismissal of Kevin McCarthy as president of the Lower House deepens the division between moderates and radicals in the Republican Party.
