A memo from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) released last August specifies that the maximum amount of increase in monthly checks from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for the new fiscal year that began on October 1 will be $1,751 dollars .
The final amount each household will receive will depend on the number of members and income level.
The official document addressed to all state SNAP offices notes that maximum allocations will increase for 48 states, the District of Columbia, Alaska, Hawaii, Guam and the Virgin Islands.
“The maximum allowance for a family of four in the 48 states and DC will be $973. Maximum allowances for a family of four will range from $1,248 to $1,937 in Alaska. The maximum allowance for a family of four will be $1,434 in Guam and $1,251 in the Virgin Islands. The maximum allowances for a family of four in Hawaii will drop to $1,759. The minimum benefit for the 48 states and DC will remain at $23,” the memo dated August 3 lists.
Each year, the USDA adjusts the amount of money allocated to recipients of the food stamp program based on the Thrifty Plan.
Through the plan, the office determines the amount of money people need to maintain a basic standard of living or adjust to the cost of living (COLA) so that they have enough money to obtain food for a nutritious diet.
Below are the maximum allocations according to the information attached to the memo:
Household with 1 person – $291
Household with 2 people – $535
Household with 3 people – $766
Household with 4 people – $973
Household with 5 people – $1,155
Household with 6 people – $1,386
Household with 7 people – $1,532
Household with 8 people – $1,751
For each additional person, $219 is added. The minimum benefit amount remains the same: $23 per month.
The release states that SNAP regional offices should ensure that administrators in the states are informed of the changes. If you have questions about the adjustment, state agencies should contact representatives in regional offices.
