American attacker Christian Pulisic scored the winning goal that took Milan to the top of the championship in Italy, beating local Genoa at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium.
After Pulisic’s goal in the 87th minute, referee Marco Piccinini decided to send off Milan’s French goalkeeper Mike Maignan at the request of the VAR after a violent foul at the gate of the area on Caleb Ekuban.
The clock had 107 minutes, completing the 7 that the judge had previously added. Coach Stefano Pioli had exhausted the five options available by then and the one who had to put on the jersey was the French striker Giroud, who started the game as a substitute but replaced his compatriot Yacine Adli in the second half.
Giroud went under the three posts with the clock entering the 101st minute, that is, 11 more than the time established by the regulations. The Icelandic Albert Gudmundsson took charge of that dangerous free kick, the ball hit the barrier and then the crossbar. The rebound, which was destined for the goal, ended up hitting a Rossonero defender to generate a corner.
Afterwards, Giroud executed a foul from his area, but the local team quickly recovered and put together a spectacular play that ended with Ekuban’s backhand clearance for the Romanian George Puscas, but the forward turned goalkeeper had a masterful reaction to block the shot from the opponent and then control when another player arrived to push her.
It was, in the end, a crucial intervention because seconds later, with the clock already at 104 minutes, the judge declared the match closed.
Milan obtained three points that consolidate it as leader of Serie A with 21 points as a result of seven wins and one defeat in the eight duels it has played so far. Behind is Lautaro Martínez’s Inter with 19, which had tied in the first round against Bologna.
