The 2023 season of the New York Yankees was one to forget. Without being able to qualify for the playoffs and registering one of the worst records in the history of the franchise. That is why the Big Apple team will have to move pieces in the offseason to correct this situation in 2024.
There are several pieces that the Yankees must move if they want to be more competitive next year. One of the most important may be the offense, since the Bronx team had the second worst average in the entire Major Leagues, only ahead of the Oakland Athletics.
These are some of the moves that the New York Yankees could make ahead of the 2024 Major League Baseball season.
Sacrifice prospects
Yankees veterans like DJ LeMahieu and Giancarlo Stanton will be difficult to negotiate in a possible departure. His high salary and, in Stanton’s case, his injury history and contract clause, will make it nearly impossible to manage a trade by offering these players.
However, what the Yankees can negotiate with is their young talent. The New York team has several prospects for which they could obtain offensive pieces that guarantee immediate performance.
And although Anthony Volpe, Jasson Domínguez, Spencer Jones and Oswald Peraza seem like untouchable rookies; There are others that are not so good and from which management could take advantage. Drew Thorpe, Roderick Arias and Everson Pereira are some prospects who could leave the Yankees this offseason.
Take advantage of Gleyber Torres’ good moment to seek a trade
One of the few lights on the Yankees’ offense last season was Venezuelan Gleyber Torres. The second baseman was, along with Anthony Volpe, the player who played the most games. He also led the team in hits, second in RBIs and second in home runs.
This excellent season by Torres could motivate the Yankees to take him as one of those sacrificed for a trade. Looking to get other offensive pieces. Gleyber even came close to being moved from the team last year and 2024 will be the last year of his contract before he enters arbitration or the Yankees could lose him to free agency. That’s why management could have Gleyber in the trade plans.
All or Nothing by Cody Bellinger
Chicago Cubs outfielder Cody Bellinger has a mutual option for 2024 with the Illinois franchise for $12.5 million. But the Yankees could enter the game and complicate negotiations if the player decides to go to New York.
Furthermore, the former Dodgers would fit perfectly on the Bronx team. Well, with the departure of Harrison Bader, Cody could be the perfect center fielder for the franchise.
Move Yankees management
Hal Steinbrenner, owner of the Yankees, was very patient during 2023 with the permanence of both Brian Cashman as general manager and Aaron Boone as manager. However, once the harvest is over, Steinbrenner will have to make a decision regarding these two positions.
So during the offseason we could see a change in the Yankees’ management, with the departure of Cashman or in the team’s bench; with a firing or resignation of Boone. This move could also help get the team’s next year on track.
