Players and members of the coaching staff of Celtic FC and Atlético de Madrid will wear black armbands in this Wednesday’s Champions League match as a show of respect and support for those affected by the conflict between Israel and Palestine.
“We have witnessed death, violence and destruction in the Holy Land in recent weeks, with thousands of people (men, women and children) killed, injured and displaced (…) Many of our colleagues, followers, friends and family have been affected by these events,” the Scottish club said in a statement.
In this sense, Celtic asked fans not to display “banners, flags and symbols in relation to the conflict and the countries involved” in the stadium.
“Celtic Park is where we come to support our football club. Recognizing this, respecting the seriousness of the tragedy that is unfolding (…) We ask that banners, flags and symbols related to the conflict and the countries involved are not displayed in Celtic Park at this time,” demanded the Glasgow team.
“We are witnessing a tragedy on a horrendous scale. As it continues, everyone at Celtic is praying for all those who have been affected (…) We also have hope and pray for peace, and for humanitarian aid to reach those who need it and who live in fear,” said the team in a statement.
The Scottish club also announced that it made a contribution to the International Committee of the Red Cross to assist with the humanitarian response in the region.
