The former player of the Mexican national team, Miguel Layún, became the new president of the Kings League Americas this Tuesday when he was selected by the league’s global boss, Gerard Piqué, during its expansion to the American continent.
Starting in January 2024 and with the same rules that became popular in Europe, the championship will be held in Mexico City and Layún will lead the competition just weeks after the full-back hangs up his boots.
The World Cup player recently reported that at the end of the Apertura 2023 tournament with América he would hang up his boots, but what seemed like a safe rest for the player will have to wait to focus his efforts on this new project, which seeks to emulate the success they obtained in Spain with the creation of the male, female and junior categories.
“This project was what the fans were waiting for with great enthusiasm: innovative football, full of emotion and surprises with the rules that make each match more dynamic,” Layún himself declared to the audience present.
“We are very excited to be part of this historic moment in the world of sports and entertainment in America,” added Layún.
In the presentation, Piqué also revealed the names of the presidents who will make up each team, highlighting that each country in America will have a representative in the tournament.
Soccer players like Javier “Chicharito” Hernández or James Rodríguez, well-known YouTubers like Germán Garmendia or Castro1021 and even artists like the urban artist Arcángel will also be part of the project.
The Kings League Americas will be closely followed by Piqué himself and the CEO of the competition, the Spanish Marc Crosas, who will ensure that the level and quality shown in Spain, which caused audience records to be broken on YouTube and Twitch, is maintained in this new edition.
