In an update on Ovidio Guzmán López’s legal case, it was confirmed that all evidence and copies presented during his upcoming trial will be destroyed once it is concluded.
This revelation comes more than a month after Guzmán’s extradition to the United States and has raised many questions about the implications for this high-profile trial.
The disclosure of this order to destroy evidence was carried out by journalist Luis Chaparro, who specializes in covering the border between the United States and Mexico, according to the media Infobae.
Chaparro is known for being the first to share a photograph of Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán’s son, Ovidio Guzmán, wearing an American prison uniform. He revealed that the order to destroy all trial evidence is accompanied by a protective order in favor of Ovidio Guzmán, which also prohibits the disclosure of any evidence presented.
“This differs from the ‘El Chapo’ trial, where the evidence was made public,” Chaparro commented, highlighting the contrast between the two cases.
Ovidio Guzmán’s legal journey in the United States began on October 18, 2023, when he was transferred from the Chicago Metropolitan Correctional Center to the Federal Court of the Northern District of Illinois for his first appearance.
In this court session, Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman reiterated the charges against Ovidio Guzmán, which include:
- Drug possession with intent to distribute.
- Participation in an ongoing criminal enterprise.
- Conspiracy to import, manufacture and distribute controlled substances.
- Money laundering conspiracy.
- Carry firearms.
After his appearance in court, Jeffrey Lichtman, the lawyer who previously defended ‘El Chapo’, declared that Ovidio Guzmán had no intention of cooperating with US authorities.
He made it clear that Guzmán had no intention of implicating his brothers Joaquín Guzmán López, Iván Archivaldo and Jesús Alfredo Guzmán Salazar, who are also wanted by US authorities.
Ovidio Guzmán’s legal journey is far from over. He is scheduled to have a second hearing in the same court on November 17, 2023. However, it is important to note that he cannot be summoned for the other charges filed against him in a New York court until the current case is resolved. , numbered 72884-748.
It is crucial to remember that, in April 2023, the Department of Justice identified Los Chapitos as responsible for the “largest, most violent and prolific fentanyl trafficking operation in the world.”
The administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Anne Milgram, emphasized that Los Chapitos were pioneers in the manufacturing and trafficking of fentanyl, a deadly drug that has caused immense damage in the United States.
