After a week of searching, the boy Kavion Brown was found dead in the East River (NYC), confirmed the family’s lawyer, Sanford Rubenstein.

The 13-year-old minor had been reported missing on Friday, October 20, shortly after 4 p.m., when according to his family, other minors dared him to jump into the water near East 6th Street, reported ABCNews.

“This is a horrible tragedy, every parent’s nightmare. The family is grateful for the concern that so many New Yorkers have expressed,” attorney Rubenstein told the DailyNews.

For a week Brown was searched with helicopters, boats and divers from the NYPD’s Emergency Services, Aviation and Ports Unit (ESU).

His mother said she thought her son had felt pressure from a group, perhaps to impress a girl. Whatever the scenario, Brown waded into the strong currents and did not return. Very few other details are known about this tragic case, whose investigation remains open.

“They recovered the body this afternoon. It wasn’t too far from 6th St. Not too far from the little barge they have there, the construction barge. We’re just trying to find out what really happened,” her aunt Alena Godfrey said yesterday.

In a similar case, in May two friends, ages 11 and 13, were found dead after several days of searching in the Hudson River in Upper Manhattan.

In January, the body of a 13-year-old girl washed up on the shore of Brooklyn Bridge Park in the East River.

In the spring of 2022, Jordan “Jay” Jones, a 20-year-old man with special needs who had gone missing, was found dead in the Hudson River.

In 2020, two 13-year-old Hispanic boys who had been reported missing were found dead weeks apart after jumping together playing into the Hudson River in NYC.
