The Dutch driver Max Verstappen won the Mexican Grand Prix this Sunday after a race that saw the early exit of the local rider and Sergio “Checo” Pérez after a crash that occurred just in the first corner of the race
Behind Verstappen, who won his 16th race of the season and thus surpassed his own record of 15 victories last season, came the Englishman Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) and later the Monegasque Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) to complete the GP podium Mexican.
The Mexican Grand Prix, the nineteenth of the Formula One World Championship and which was held at the Autódromo de los Hermanos Rodríguez in the country’s capital, was interrupted for the first time in history with a red flag on lap 35 of 71 by a spectacular accident of the Dane Kevin Magnussen (Haas), who suffered no physical consequences.
At the time of the interruption, Verstappen (who has been mathematically three-time champion for three weeks) was leading the test ahead of Leclerc and Hamilton.
With this victory Verstappen achieved his 51st victory in the highest motorsport category (the fifth in Mexico) and equaled the fourth historical mark of the four-time French world champion Alain Prost
For his part, “Checo” made a sensational start and when he tried to pass both Ferraris he collided with the Monegasque Charles Leclerc and was thrown into the first of the 17 corners of the Mexico City track.
“I’m sad, because I had a good start. I only thought about winning. I didn’t even think about the podium; I just wanted to win. I saw an opportunity and jumped at it. I took a risk, but if it had gone well, I would have come out of the first corner first,” Pérez told DAZN.
“It hurts me a lot because of all the people, but I’m going home calm, because I tried. However, yes, I am leaving sad, because I wanted to give the victory to the people,” explained “Checo” after having to retire in Mexico.
