Democratic Congressman Dean Phillips announced that he will seek his party’s nomination for next year’s presidential election, posing a direct challenge to US President Joe Biden, who hopes to be re-elected.
Phillips, in an interview with CBS on Friday, assured that the current president has done a “spectacular job” but was concerned because the 2024 elections are “about the future” of the country.
“I love Joe Biden, I want to make that clear, he is an extraordinary man. I believe he saved our country. He was the right man in the last election. Thank God he won, but that is not what the numbers say,” said the politician.
He added that there is an exhausted majority in the United States that does not want Biden in the Presidency and that does not support the Republicans, who have not yet defined their candidate in the primary, but that former President Donald Trump is emerging as a possible winner.
Dean Phillips: We can lose freedoms
“I have to do it. I love our country so much, it has given me everything, it has given to so many people. It’s the best gift any of us have ever had, and it’s at risk. And we need a change and I’m ready to make it happen. My father gave his life to this country. A million Americans gave their lives to protect our freedoms, everything we love, and we are in a position where we can lose that if we make the wrong decisions. And I think the country is ready for change,” he stated.
The Minnesota congressman is the highest-ranking candidate to enter the race for the Democratic presidential nomination.
“I’m going to offer it. I’m going to be respectful: I’m tired of nonsense, pettiness, aggression, anger, fear, misery. We can have hope again, let’s be America again. I want to carry that message, it is an offer. I think Americans should have a choice. And, thank God, we still live in a country where there is,” said the congressman.
Dean Phillips, who described himself as a proud Democrat, called on anyone else seeking to win the Presidency to join and not be a third party candidate or undermine the interest of the political organization.
“I’m afraid that right now we have people who are going to undermine the eventual Democratic candidate. I will run as a Democrat. I am a proud Democrat and if I am not the nominee, I will do everything I can to support the campaign of whoever the nominee is, including if it is President Biden. “That is my commitment,” he insisted.
Although he did not want to dismiss Joe Biden’s attempt because of his age, he said that it is time for them to start involving young people because some of the “best and brightest ideas” come from them, unlike older generations.
Before Dean Phillips, there was Robert F. Kennedy, nephew of former President John F. Kennedy, who decided at the beginning of October to withdraw from the internal race to compete independently in the presidential elections.
