The world of ice hockey is in mourning after the terrible death of American player Adam Johnson that occurred this Sunday during a game between the Nottingham Panthers and the Sheffield Steelers corresponding to the Challenge Cup of the Elite Ice Hockey League in England.
The figure who was part of the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 2019 and 2020 seasons died after suffering a strong blow against a rival that resulted in a cut on the neck with the skate blade during this match in England; The action caused Johnson to immediately fall to the ground with severe blood loss.
The 29-year-old was quickly taken off the ice by the referee and one of his teammates. However, the cut was too deep for members of the medical team to do anything to save his life.
“The Nottingham Panthers are truly devastated to announce that Adam Johnson has tragically passed away following a freak accident at the game in Sheffield last night,” the team said in a news release on Sunday.
“We at the Panthers would like to send our thoughts and condolences to Adam’s family, his partner and all his friends at this extremely difficult time. “Everyone at the club, including players, staff, management and owners, is heartbroken by the news of Adam’s passing,” the institution added.
Johnson, a native of Minnesota, played 13 games during parts of the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons with the Pittsburgh team in the NHL before signing a contract with the Malmo Redhawks of Sweden for 2020-21; In these games with the American team he managed to score a goal and three assists.
“The Pittsburgh Penguins join the entire hockey world in mourning the life of Adam Johnson, whose life ended tragically too soon. We offer our deepest condolences to Adam’s family and friends, as well as all of Adam’s past and present teammates and coaches. “Adam will always be a part of the Penguins family,” the Penguins said in a statement.
