A controversial situation has arisen within the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) after it was revealed that New Jersey Senator Bob Menéndez transferred a $15,000 contribution from his Nuevo Milenio PAC to the DSCC on the same day he They made public the bribery charges against him.
It must be remembered that Senator Menéndez faces accusations of having benefited from the Egyptian government and participating in a corrupt scheme with other individuals.
The controversy lies in the fact that the contribution was made before his accusation was officially announced, according to Fox News.
“It does not appear that the DSCC has returned the money by the end of September, which is the latest time covered in the most recent filings. The committee previously received $30,000 from Menendez in recent years, but has not said anything about those contributions,” the outlet reported.
Some politicians have chosen to return or donate the money sent by Menéndez to their committees, while others have remained silent or have not made a final decision on the matter, the outlet said.
The three Democrats who sent contribution refunds to Menendez’s PAC in late September were John Fetterman; Delaware Representative Lisa Blunt Rochester; and New Jersey Representative Bonnie Watson Coleman. This is according to a search of documents from the Federal Electoral Commission.
West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin’s office, however, told the outlet that “until there is a verdict, this is a matter between the people of New Jersey and Senator Bob Menendez.”
Senator Menéndez has maintained his innocence and is confident in his total exoneration.
The future of Menendez
The charge against Menéndez centers on his alleged use of his power and influence in the Senate to benefit the Egyptian government in exchange for bribes that included cash, gold bars, mortgage payments, compensation for work not performed and other benefits.
Despite these accusations, Menéndez insists that his behavior was within the authority of his office and has denounced a smear campaign against him.
Even though the allegation has led to a wave of Democrats calling for Menendez to resign, including DSCC Chairman Sen. Gary Peters of Michigan, it has yet to be determined how Menendez’s candidacy will be addressed in the coming year. .
The senator insists that this is a campaign against him.
“Since this investigation was leaked almost a year ago, there has been an active smear campaign from anonymous sources and innuendo to create an air of impropriety where none exists,” he wrote shortly after the indictment.
