The Hispanic Carlos Mendoza, currently coach of the New York Yankees, emerged this Wednesday as one of the main candidates for the position of manager of the New York Mets and was interviewed by the team’s main managers to fill the vacancy left by Buck Showalter.
Mendoza, who has extensive experience of almost 15 years in the Major Leagues, would be among the finalists for the position according to several reports, also competing for the position with Milwaukee Brewers strategist Craig Counsell.
The current Yankees bench coach since 2020 has been with the Mules since 2009 and during his internship with the team he has completed several tasks, including serving as an infielder instructor and also a base coach.
Although Mendoza could cross the sidewalk and head to Queens, the New York Mets’ claims are not the only ones the Venezuelan has, as he is also being considered to be manager of the Cleveland Guardians after the retirement of the experienced Terry Francona.
In the past, a couple of years ago, Mendoza was also interviewed to take over the reins of the Chicago White Sox but in the end the team appointed Pedro Grifol as the team’s manager.
The Mets are currently undergoing a roster restructuring that began in the middle of the 2023 season when the board decided to change Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer, two of their biggest stars, to lighten the team’s salary bill.
Subsequently, general manager Billy Eppler also resigned in response to the appointment of David Stearns as President of Special Operations, a position placed directly by owner Steve Cohen that did not sit well with Eppler himself.
With the appointment of the Mets manager, new signings are expected to begin for the 2024 Major League season, which is speculated with possible contracts for players such as Juan Soto, Cody Bellinger or the Japanese stars Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Yuki Matsui, among many others. .
