Bayern Munich experienced a true sporting tragedy this Wednesday after a third division team, Saarbrücken, beat the German giant 2-1 in the round of 16 of the German Cup thanks to a goal in the last minute of the match.
Contrary to what one might think, Bayern Munich came out with a gala eleven made up of the team’s main regular figures, highlighting the return of Manuel Neuer to the goal after a long injury and three of the usual starting defenders (Mattia De Ligt, King Min Jae and Alphonse Davies).
In addition, they also had the presence of starters such as Serge Gnabry, Leroy Sané and the experienced midfielder Thomas Müller, so the debacle against the humble Saarbrücken represented a complete failure.
It was Müller himself who would open the account in the 16th minute after an assist from Frans Krätzig, but Patrick Sontheimer equalized the actions near the break, foreshadowing what would come later.
Although Bavarian coach Thomas Tuchel went to the bench to try to find the match, the hosts knew how to defend themselves well and in the last minute of the match they found a sacrifice to the effort, which came in the most unexpected way.
After a throw-in in the 96th minute, it ended with a pass of death for Marcel Gaus to beat Neuer with a cross shot and classify his team to the round of 8 of the competition.
Although Bayern Munich’s elimination may seem unprecedented, this is not the first time they have fallen into a similar round. In the 2021-2022 season, Borussia Mönchengladbach gave them a scandalous 5-0 win and a year before, another humble team, Holstein Kiel, also knocked them off their path to the Cup.
