Nine out of ten women feel pressure to style their hair according to society’s expectations, according to research by Dove. And as a community with diverse hair types of all lengths, textures and colors, Latinas are no strangers to this social pressure.
For this reason, the beauty brand announced the #MyhairAMiModo initiative, designed in collaboration with advocates from the Latinx community, to promote conversations that question society’s limited expectations related to hair and celebrate the diversity in this community.
To kick off the campaign, Dove partnered with Bomba Estéreo singer Li Saumet to re-record the band’s hit song “Soy Yo,” with an updated message and music video that speaks directly to self-expression. through hair, encouraging Latinas of all generations to celebrate their unique hair that makes them themselves.
“For more than 20 years, Dove has been committed to redefining narrow standards of beauty so that women and girls can see that their beauty is a source of happiness, not anxiety, and this includes their relationship with their hair,” says Bérengère Loubatier, Global Vice President of Dove Hair. “Through #MyhairAMiModo, we aim to elevate the voices of the Latinx community and celebrate the beauty of all hair types, textures and styles, so they feel empowered to wear their hair their way.”
To accompany this revamped anthem, Dove released a new music video featuring footage of Bomba Estéreo and the child star of the original “Soy Yo” music video, Sarai González.
“The #MiCabelloAMiManera campaign and our collaboration with Dove are very representative of what Bomba Estéreo means,” shared Saumet, the lead vocalist. “The updated verses talk about being authentic, being original and, above all, accepting and celebrating yourself just as you are. The connection was very organic for me, as I often experiment with my hair to express my personal style.”
This campaign builds on the launch of the Dove Love Your Hair collection introduced earlier this year. The collection was developed to make personalized hair care more widely accessible and to effectively nourish a variety of hair textures, types, lengths and colors, with the mission of encouraging women to proudly wear the hair that makes them who they are. themselves.
