The Supreme Electoral Court of El Salvador agreed this Friday to register the candidacy of President Nayib Bukele, for the Nuevas Ideas party, to run for immediate re-election in the February 2024 elections.

“The Collegiate Body agreed to register, with four votes and one abstention from Judge Julio Olivo, the presidential formula of the Nuevas Ideas party, after confirming that it meets the legal requirements,” indicated the electoral body through the X platform.

The controversial politician thus becomes the first president in the democratic stage of El Salvador to become a candidate for immediate re-election, the Efe agency noted.

On October 26, Nayib Bukele materialized his intention to seek re-election.

“The Salvadoran people are going to decide if they want to continue building the new El Salvador or if they want to return to the past. We are going, with the help of God, to bury that opposition and for that we need to sweep all the polls,” he stated at that time.

Nayib Bukele celebrated

President Nayib Bukele celebrated that his candidacy is registered, a process that, he assured, was legally registered and without votes against. “Legally registered! And without votes against. God with us! ”He stated in a brief message shared on the social network.

The other publication reminded Salvadorans abroad who want to vote in the 2024 elections that they have until Sunday, November 5 to obtain or renew their unique identity document.

“If the unique identity document has an address abroad, they will be able to vote online starting January 6. If you have an address in El Salvador, you will be able to vote in person at consulates, embassies and the voting centers enabled on February 4,” he explained.

If someone does not have the document, Bukele added, there is still time to get it. According to him, the process is quick and people will have their birth certificate free of charge.

He clarified that it is not necessary to make an appointment at any consulate for these procedures. “Also the consulates in the United States and some other countries will work this weekend with extended hours, from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm,” he indicated.

After he received approval from the Supreme Electoral Tribunal, lawyers from a civil movement and candidates for opposition deputies presented requests to disqualify him because they claim that immediate presidential re-election is prohibited in at least 6 articles of the Constitution, Efe noted.

The path to Nayib Bukele’s re-election opened in 2021, when the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court changed a criterion for interpreting the Constitution. The judges argued that the prohibition of immediate re-election is for a ruler who has been in power for 10 years.

Until before this change, a president had to finish his 5-year term and wait 10 to seek the Presidency again.

To all Salvadorans abroad who want to vote in the 2024 elections, remember that you have until November 5 to obtain or renew your DUI.

If the DUI has a foreign address, they will be able to vote online starting January 6.
