Englishman Anthony Taylor, Football Association (FA) referee, was relegated by the Premier League to the second division this weekend after he awarded a non-existent penalty in the match between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Newcastle United last day.
Specifically, Taylor will whistle the English Football League (EFL) match between Preston North End and Coventry City. Taylor will take charge of a Championship match for the first time in four years.
Taylor awarded a penalty for an alleged kick by Hwang-Hee Chan to Fabian Schar that did not exist and the VAR did not intervene to correct the action. The penalty made it 1-2 for Newcastle, who ended up tying the game.
“It was a scandalous decision. It was a terrible decision on the field and also terrible that the VAR did not intervene,” said Gary O’Neil, Wolves coach.
Taylor is not the first referee to be downgraded this season as lineman Adrian Holmes had to work on the wing in a Milwall vs. Hull City after disallowing Luis Díaz’s goal against Tottenham Hotspur on the field.
