While Lionel Messi was awarded the Ballon d’Or last Monday in Paris, in the women’s category the award went to the Spanish player from FC Barcelona Aitana Bonmatí. At just 25 years old she won her first individual grand prize.
The midfielder was a key player in winning the Women’s World Cup for Spain last August. Competition from which she also won the award for best player of the tournament.
Recently in an interview for the official channel of FC Barcelona, Bonmatí analyzed the current situation of women’s football. “Right now both Barça and Spain are playing very well, so perhaps the fight for social causes and equality has united us even more, but it is also a matter of simply being professional,” commented the player.
Bonmatí also commented on the Rubiales case, which ultimately led to the dismissal of the president of the Spanish Football Federation and his coach. In addition to achieving improvements in personnel, travel and aid for players with small children. All of this has also coincided with a strike by players in the Spanish women’s league to achieve a higher minimum wage.
However, the Ballon d’Or winner thinks it is time to turn the page on that event and start focusing on what really matters to them, which is football.
“Everything has happened very quickly, and the only thing we think about is the moment when we can focus only on football and leave other matters behind. We already have enough to think about just training and winning games without having to pay attention to other things that sap our energy, generate stress and are not good for our health. So we are all ready to get back to football,” the young player said.
