This Sunday marks the 52nd edition of the New York Marathon, one of the most popular and important in the world and which draws more than 50,000 athletes every year since 1970.
After the equally important races in Boston, Berlin, Chicago, London and Tokyo, the New York Marathon closes the cycle of “majors” of the year, in which the winner will take home a large sum of money after running the 42 kilometers of the circuit.
The New York Marathon prizes vary depending on the category of runners: Last year Sharon Lokedi and Evans Chebet, winners of the women’s and men’s categories, respectively, received a prize of $100,000 each.
For their part, Marcel Hug and Susannah Scaroni, winners of the wheelchair category, received a prize of $25,000 each.
In the elite category, the winner takes home $100,000, second wins $75,000, third wins $50,000, fourth gets $30,000 and fifth is awarded $25,000. Additionally, if any runner manages to break the circuit records, they will be awarded an additional $50,000.
Geoffrey Mutai, with a time of two hours, five minutes and six seconds, is the one who has held the New York Marathon time record since 2011, while Margaret Okayo, with a time of two hours, 22 minutes and 31 seconds, has held the record in the women’s category since 2003.
The race route passes through Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx and ends in Central Park. Runners will cross the Brooklyn Bridge, Fifth Avenue and the Manhattan Bridge, before finishing in the heart of the city.
