Mexican boxer Julio César Chávez Jr. was admitted to a psychiatric hospital after allegedly ingesting a large amount of pills.
According to TMZ Sports, the former middleweight world champion consumed a dozen pills and his wife Frida Chávez called the police because she feared for the boxer’s safety.
TMZ reports that Chavez contacted police in Hollywood, California, on October 24 after becoming concerned about her husband’s health.
The same outlet clarifies that the situation is a bit confusing, but reported that Chávez Jr. was prohibited from leaving after officials determined that he needed psychiatric care.
Chávez Jr. would be in the 5150 rehabilitation center in California. The law allows certain officials (police, doctors, etc.) to decide whether to hold a patient for up to 72 hours if they conclude that person is “a danger to others, themselves, or is seriously disabled.”
His father, Mexican legend Julio César Chávez, recently expressed fear for his son’s well-being.
“I feel sorry for him because his children are small and he is not enjoying them. It hurts me that he is going to go crazy, that he is going to have an accident driving at 12-1 in the morning at full speed, that he is going to have a heart attack because of all the pills he takes,” Chávez Sr. said on the program. Joking with the Riveras.
Chavez Jr, with a record of 53-6-1, last fought David Zegarra in December 2021, a fight he won by unanimous decision.
