Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, warned that Israel will be in charge of the security of Gaza “indefinitely” once the war they are currently waging in that Palestinian territory ends.
“I believe that Israel will have, for an indefinite period, overall responsibility for security because we have seen what happens when we don’t have it,” Netanyahu said in an excerpt from the interview with the American network ABC.
“When we don’t have that security responsibility, what we have is an eruption of Hamas terror on a scale we couldn’t imagine,” he added.
Furthermore, the Israeli Prime Minister responded this way when asked who should govern Gaza once the war ends, to which he replied: “Those who do not want to follow the path of Hamas.”
Security in Gaza by Israel
Furthermore, in a recent Hebrew briefing with Israeli journalists, an Israeli official made clear that Israel’s security responsibilities in Gaza will continue after the current conflict with Hamas.
This statement comes despite US President Joe Biden’s warning that reoccupying Gaza would be a “big mistake.”
Israeli officials emphasize that they are not interested in reoccupying Gaza, but are committed to maintaining security control, according to a Times of Israel report.
The official added that beyond rehabilitation, Gaza must undergo a “denazification” process to address the culture of hostility toward Jews. Netanyahu also made a controversial comparison, comparing Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar to Adolf Hitler in his bunker.
Additionally, Israel plans to adapt the deployment of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) along the northern border. The IDF’s focus will be on countering mass border violations, rather than just dealing with isolated terrorist cells. This change reflects Israel’s commitment to improving its military capabilities.
The official stated that with the current deployment and preparation, Hezbollah’s potential to breach the border is significantly reduced, making the issue of “capturing the north” less relevant.
