Ana Cecilia Gervasi, Foreign Minister of Peru, and Gustavo Meza Cuadra, that country’s ambassador to the United States, resigned from their positions this Monday after criticism of a frustrated meeting announced between Peruvian President Dina Boluarte and US President Joe Biden.
The supposed meeting was scheduled for last Friday, within the framework of the Leaders’ Summit of the Alliance for Economic Prosperity in the Americas, in Washington.
The chancellor’s resignation was confirmed by Alberto Otárola, president of the Council of Ministers of Peru, who pointed out in a press conference that the now former official will move “to another stage” in her professional life.
“On behalf of the government, I want to express gratitude for the efficient management of the sector. A professional who rose to the occasion. We believe that in the next few hours the new Minister of Foreign Affairs will be sworn in,” she said.
This occurred after the Congressional Foreign Relations Commission rejected Gervasi’s request to present a report on Dina Boluarte’s activities in the United States and the alleged meeting with Joe Biden that finally became a dialogue between the halls of the House. Blanca, reported the Efe agency.
In the resignation letter, the chancellor “profoundly” thanked the president, assured that she served in her position with the greatest dedication and satisfaction of having served her country.
“I will continue to collaborate with you and with Peru from the responsibilities that I have to carry out in my capacity as a career diplomatic official,” said Gervasi.
Previously, the official had assured that the Presidency of Peru provided true and supported information when requesting Congress to authorize Boluarte to travel to the United States.
Thus, the minister responded to the request for information that several congressmen made about the failed meeting with Joe Biden and that some considered that it was not really agreed upon. However, Gervasi stated that the US State Department had confirmed the meeting and added that the format of the meeting was determined by US authorities.
Likewise, Gustavo Meza Cuadra, as Peru’s ambassador to the United States, resigned from his position in a letter he had addressed to Foreign Minister Ana Cecilia Gervasi, in which he expressed his regret for the situation that was generated in the country by these events.
