The United States Government will allocate $16.4 billion to improve the rail line that connects Boston with Washington, DC, the most used passenger train in the country.

President Joe Biden is expected to present this Monday at an event in New Castle, Delaware, the infrastructure investment plan, which includes 25 projects to modernize tunnels, bridges, roads, stations, and electrical and signaling systems.

The plan is part of an ambitious initiative by the Biden Administration to renew the country’s infrastructure and make them more sustainable and efficient, the objective of which is to make train service faster, safer and more ecological than other transportation options, such as car or plane.

For his part, the president’s senior advisor and White House Infrastructure Coordinator, Mitch Landrieu, stated that the current northeast corridor is the product of investments that date back to the 19th century.

“Thanks to President Biden, we are going to rebuild and repair infrastructure that urgently needs improvement; “The current northeast corridor is the product of investments dating back to the 1830s,” Landrieu said.

US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg added that the federal, state and local governments only spent about 1% of what they spent on roads on rail.

The measure provides for a considerable increase in jobs

The investment foresees the creation of more than 100,000 jobs, especially in the construction of a new railway tunnel on the Hudson River and the replacement of the current Baltimore and Potomac tunnel, approximately 150 years old.

Meanwhile, the administrator of the US Federal Railroad Administration, Amit Bose, explained that the plan contemplates innovation in all its phases, in order to have faster trips, with fewer interruptions and safer.

The plan also includes a study that will examine possibilities to reduce travel time between Washington, D.C. and New York City and another to study infrastructure to improve service for trains traveling the northeast corridor through Connecticut and Rhode Island.

The measure was described by Biden as “historic,” and he assured that it demonstrates the president’s conviction and commitment to restoring and improving rail service to the northeast of the country.
