The NFL reported this Tuesday that the game between the champions Kansas City Chiefs and the Miami Dolphins last Sunday held in Frankfurt, Germany, was the most watched in the history of its international series with 9.6 million viewers.

“The audience of 9.6 million for the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Miami Dolphins is the highest for a game in the international series,” the NFL noted in a statement.

The Chiefs defeated the Dolphins 21-14 at Deutsche Bank Park in the first of two 2023 season games scheduled in Germany. The second will take place next Sunday between the New England Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts.

According to the NFL, these 9.6 million viewers surpassed by 66 percent the record of 5.8 million that was set last year by the game in which the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, led by Tom Brady, defeated the Seattle Seahawks 21-16 that took place at the Allianz Arena in Munich.

In this 2023 season, the NFL scheduled five games for its international series outside the United States, three in England and two in Germany.

“The first three international games that were televised on the NFL Network averaged 6.5 million viewers, 20 percent more than the first three games of 2022, which had an average of 5.4 million,” the statement detailed.

In the 2022 season the three games that took place in London were the following; Saints 25-28 Vikings, Packers 22-27 Giants and Jaguars 17-21 Broncos.

This year London hosted these clashes; Jaguars 23-7 Falcons, Bills 20-25 Jaguars and Titans 16-24 Ravens.

The NFL’s message also highlighted that the digital transmission of this season’s games has generated an average audience per minute of 465,000 viewers, the highest in the history of the international series.

The NFL’s regular season international game program began in 2005, the year in which the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City was the first host outside the United States.

In 2007 the series was extended to London and from 2022 to Germany.
