The University of Pennsylvania reported threats to the FBI through emails that were directed at its Jewish community, the institution’s president, Liz Magill, reported Monday in a statement sent to members of the university.

The report notes that the emails contained anti-Semitic hate messages and warned of possible acts of violence against Jews on campus. Some of the emails specifically mentioned Penn Hillel, a Jewish organization at the university, and Lauder College House, a student residence.

Magill called the emails “vile” and said Penn’s Public Safety Division was immediately alerted to the threats. Penn police notified the FBI about the “possible hate crime” and a joint investigation was launched.

“Based on these emails, the Penn Division of Public Safety conducted extensive security raids at Penn Hillel and Lauder College House and found no credible threats at this time,” Magill wrote, adding that Penn police will remain in place. the location until further notice and increased the security presence.

“Threats of violence are not tolerated at Penn and will be met with swift and decisive action. “Penn Public Safety is urgently working with the FBI to identify the individual or individuals responsible for these hateful and threatening emails and to ensure they are apprehended and punished to the fullest extent of the law,” he added.

Likewise, Magill urged members of the university to look out for each other and report any suspicious incidents.

The case of the University of Pennsylvania joins other episodes of anti-Semitism that have been recorded in the United States in recent months, coinciding with the increase in tensions in the Middle East.

The recent incident comes after a 69-year-old California man died Monday following an altercation at an intersection protesting the war between Israel and Hamas.

The altercation in which Paul Kessler was a victim occurred on Sunday afternoon in the city of Thousand Oaks, where simultaneous protests in favor of Israel and Palestine were taking place at the intersection of Westlake Boulevard and Thousand Oaks Boulevard. The man was pushed back and hit his head on the ground, causing his death a day later.
