The film will be produced by the creator of “Super Mario”, Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad, producer of films such as “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”, as detailed by the Kyoto-based company in a statement, where it did not reveal a possible release date.
The film will be co-financed by Nintendo and Sony, although the former will be in charge of more than 50% of the financing, while distribution will be carried out by Sony, said text stated.
“By becoming deeply involved in film production with the goal of making everyone smile through entertainment, Nintendo will continue its efforts to produce unique entertainment and offer it to as many people as possible,” the company said in the statement.
The announcement comes after the release this year of “Super Mario Bros.: the Movie,” a huge box office success that also helped boost sales linked to this franchise, something that Nintendo would now seek to transfer to Zelda.
Also a day after Nintendo announced its results for April-September, where it expanded its net profit by 17.7%, to 271.298 million yen ($1.8 billion), a record figure for a first half and driven by weakness of the yen.
One of the sales drivers was precisely the launch in May of the video game “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom”, which has sold 19.5 million copies.
Revenue from Nintendo’s mobile titles and IP management business soared 133.3% to 55 billion yen, driven by the release of “Super Mario Bros.: The Movie” and the effect which this has had in the increase in sales linked to this franchise.
Nintendo was today the second most traded company of the day on the Tokyo Stock Exchange and rose around 6.40% at the mid-session break, its best result since December 2020.
