A Florida couple was convicted of felonies and misdemeanors for their role in the breach of the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021. Their actions, along with those of others, disrupted a joint session of Congress, in an attempt to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election.

Jamie Buteau, 50, was sentenced to 22 months in prison for the serious crime of assaulting, resisting or impeding certain officers, the District of Columbia Attorney’s Office reported. While Jennifer Peck Buteau, 46, was sentenced to 90 days for a misdemeanor charge of parading, demonstrating or picketing in a Capitol building.

The people, from Ocala, pleaded guilty to the charges on July 24 in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. U.S. District Court Judge Randolph Moss also ordered Jamie to serve 24 months of supervised release and pay $2,000 in restitution.

Government information indicates that the Buteaus traveled to Washington on January 6, 2021 to protest the certification of the results of the 2020 presidential election in the United States.

Around 2:25 p.m., they entered the Capitol through the Senate wing door after a mob of former President Donald Trump’s supporters broke the door and an adjacent window. The couple, once inside, moved with other people to a lobby that separated the Crypt from the Capitol Visitor Center, according to the Prosecutor’s Office.

A few minutes later, the couple was at the front of a mob. Jennifer and others propped up some roll-up doors that helped secure parts of the building, while Jamie threw a folding chair at Capitol Police, which hit a wall and bounced off an officer’s arm.

After that, the Buteaus continued with the rioters and walked through the building’s Visitor Center, despite “numerous and obvious signs that they should not be there.” The couple left the building around 2:45 p.m., but remained on restricted Capitol grounds for a few minutes. During that time, they demoted officers who were trying to do their jobs.

“At approximately 2:57 p.m., after police deployed chemical irritants to disperse rioters, Jennifer Buteau spat twice at police officers while Jamie Buteau looked on approvingly and recorded with her mobile phone. Later, Jamie Buteau got into an armored police vehicle,” says the District Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.

The couple was arrested by the FBI on June 23, 2021 in Ocala.

Since January 6, 2021, more than 1,200 people have been charged in nearly all 50 states with crimes related to the breach of the United States Capitol. They include more than 400 people accused of assaulting or impeding the application of the law, a serious crime.
