A small plane with the message “Premier League=Corruption” flew over the Etihad Stadium in the middle of the match between Manchester City and Liverpool on matchday 13 of the Premier League.
Although the match broadcast ignored the flyover of the banner, photographers from international agencies such as AFP managed to capture the moment. The main group of Everton fans, called 1878, vindicated the protest message by posting photos and videos on their official X account (formerly Twitter).
Everton fans hired this plane as a protest against the 10-point penalty that the Liverpool club received for alleged financial irregularities.
It should be noted that Manchester City, a club majority owned by the United Arab Emirates investment fund, was accused of 115 counts of financial irregularities, but an investigation into the team has not yet been opened.
With the 10-point penalty, Everton fell to 14th place in the table to remain with only four points and will have to fight to avoid relegation to the second division.
Goodison Park also showed its discontent against the Premier League in the match between Everton and Manchester United held this Sunday, with chants insulting the league and taking out red cards in which the Premier logo was seen with the word “corrupt.”
Banners such as “Where there is power, greed and money… there is corruption” were seen in the stadium.
“Everton are both shocked and disappointed by the decision of the Premier League Commission. The Club considers that the Commission has imposed a totally disproportionate and unfair sporting sanction,” the Toffee club said in a statement issued after learning of the sanction.
“The Club has already communicated its intention to appeal the decision to the Premier League. “The appeal process will now begin and the Club’s case will be heard by an Appeals Board appointed in accordance with Premier League rules in due course,” Everton stated at the time.
