WASHINGTON – A team of advisors to the Argentine president-elect, Javier Milei, went to the United States Department of the Treasury this Tuesday to meet with officials from the Biden government, in a meeting that the future president did not attend.
The team of advisors formed by Gerardo Werthein, Nicolás Posse, Luis Caputo, accompanied by the United States ambassador to Argentina, Marc Stanley, left this morning from the hotel where Milei is in the direction of the Treasury Department.
The right-wing leader is scheduled to visit the White House to meet with the National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, and also with Juan González, Biden’s main advisor for Latin America, sources from his team confirmed to EFE.
Although it was initially believed that Milei would visit the International Monetary Fund (IMF), it will finally be the advisors Posse and Caputo who will meet with the director of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, and with the deputy director Gita Gopinath.
Milei had a telephone conversation with Georgieva last Friday. Argentina is the main debtor of the Fund, with $46,000 million dollars.
The Washington-based organization committed in this first formal contact with the president-elect to “support efforts” to resolve Argentina’s severe macroeconomic imbalances.
Milei, who will be sworn in as Argentina’s president on December 10, traveled to New York on Sunday night, where on Monday he visited Rabbi Schneerson’s grave at the Montefiore Jewish Cemetery.
He then had lunch with former United States President Bill Clinton (1993-2001) as part of his first trip to the North American country since winning the elections, before traveling to the American capital.
After his victory in the last round of the elections on November 19, Milei spoke by phone with Biden and with former President Donald Trump (2017-2021), who could be the rival of the current American president in the US presidential elections. in November 2024.
According to an official statement from the office of the leader of La Libertad Avanza, Trump plans to meet with Milei in Buenos Aires.
