Controversy and Madonna have walked hand in hand since the beginning of the singer’s career. And although the performer of “Music” is often judged subjectively and without any justification, in many others, it is the artist herself who puts herself in this situation.
And the best example of the above were the recent photographs of the singer where she is seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and dark glasses. But the most striking thing about the snapshots, which were taken while Madonna was walking through Italy, is the image alluding to Pope Francis that was printed on her garment.
In it you can see the profile of the pontiff of Argentine origin, which is highlighted with red lines on its edges, with wings behind his back. Although you cannot notice any type of legend or name, the image is a clear allusion to the current Pope Francis.
Due to the above, criticism of the artist was immediate to the point of being accused of being disrespectful by the Catholic community.
The singer wore this controversial sweatshirt when she left a luxurious hotel in the city of Milan, a city she visited for her most recent show. However, it should be noted that the singer, as a gesture of audacity and daring, wore this garment in one of the cities closest to the Pope’s residence in Italy: the Vatican.
It should be noted that this is not the first time that the popular “Material Girl” singer has been seen wearing the sweatshirt. And the singer was seen wearing the same garment during her rehearsals for the current tour “The Celebration” last month. On that occasion, and according to its creators, Abel Cepeda and Will Kowall, the sweatshirt was created from a controversial phrase by the artist where she said that she would like to see the Pope wearing a t-shirt with the artist’s name.

Madonna’s actions, as controversial as they may seem, are just one of the many “movements” that the singer has made as a way to challenge Catholicism. It should be noted that the “Vogue” singer has been considered, for more than 30 years, a persona “non grata” in the Vatican.
However, despite how contradictory it may seem, the singer has called Pope Francis her “favorite,” to the point of declaring that she would like to have a personal meeting with him.
Just last year, in 2022, the singer published a message, through her X account, where she addressed the pontiff directly asking him for a meeting to “discuss some important matters.” In the playful message, Madonna also mentions that she considers herself a good Catholic and that she needed to make a confession, something she had not done for many decades.
