Brazilian triathlete Luisa Baptista, winner of the Lima 2019 Pan American Games, is admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after being hit by a motorcycle while training on a bicycle in Brazil. Her condition, although stable within the gravity, keeps her in a delicate situation, according to official sources this Sunday.

Baptista, 29, underwent surgery and was quickly transferred to the ICU of the Santa Casa de São Carlos hospital in São Paulo, according to a source from the Brazilian Triathlon Confederation. “We are very dismayed. She is stable, but her situation remains serious,” the source told EFE.

The triathlete was admitted to the hospital with multiple fractures and lung injuries after being brutally hit by a motorcycle while training with a group of colleagues on a road in São Carlos on Saturday morning.

Initially, the Sesi São Carlos club declared that a car had invaded the opposite lane, hitting Baptista head-on and fleeing without assistance. However, they later rectified it, mentioning that a motorcyclist was responsible for the accident.

The driver of the motorcycle, who according to reports did not have a license, was also injured, although his life is not in danger, as cited by the ‘G1’ portal.

The Civil Police has launched an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the incident.

Baptista represented Brazil at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and at the recent Pan American Games this year in Santiago, Chile.

The Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) sent a message on social networks wishing “a speedy recovery to Baptista, champion in both the individual and mixed categories at the 2019 Pan American Games,” after the serious accident suffered on Saturday.
