Thousands of migrants left this Sunday from the city of Tapachula, in the Mexican state of Chiapas, in a caravan heading towards the United States, a few hours before Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The majority of foreigners who move in this group are families with babies and small children, pregnant women, older adults and people with disabilities.
Luis Rey García Villagrán, human rights defender from Dignificación Humana, told The universal of Mexico that the closed-door policy of Mexican immigration and refugee institutions has led to undocumented immigrants walking towards the United States. This despite the crisis that is occurring at different points along the border.
“There is a plug and a human knot that is reflected in this group of people. We tell the Mexican state that it leaves us no choice but to walk until the National Migration Institute grants immigration permits. Today we are the poorest, the poorest, those of us who are at the height of need, those of us who do not have the money to pay for visas (or) coyotes,” he said.
The Mexican newspaper detailed that the walk began early this Sunday morning after a prayer.
