Mexican Rafa Márquez is being considered as a possible successor to Xavi Hernández for the position of technical director at Futbol Club Barcelona, in case Hernández decides to leave his position at the Catalan team.
According to reports from Spain’s Cadena Cope, Barcelona president Joan Laporta is quite satisfied with Márquez’s performance at the helm of Barça Atlétic, the institution’s ‘B’ development team.
Márquez has managed to maintain a good competitive level in the youth team, competing in the third division of Spanish football, which has earned the approval of Laporta.
However, Laporta’s plan is to keep Xavi Hernández for the moment. Only in the event that the current Barcelona coach decides to retire, would it be considered Rafa Márquez’s turn to take over as first team strategist.
Furthermore, the same media indicates that, if Rafa Márquez were to become the coach of Barcelona, Laporta has in mind to offer him a long-term project, rather than considering him as an interim coach.
There is a growing number of opinions that have suggested the possible departure of Xavi Hernández from the ‘culé’ team this season. Although the team continues to compete in the Champions League, Barcelona is in third place in the Spanish LaLiga and is going through a small crisis of results.
