A young man traveling alone from Philadelphia to Fort Myers ended up 160 miles off course in Orlando, in a shocking incident that left a grandmother in trouble and an airline searching for answers.
María Ramos waited for her 6-year-old grandson to arrive in Fort Myers, but was told he was not on the expected flight. The confusion intensified when she learned that he had landed in Orlando, while her luggage arrived safely in Fort Myers.
According to a CBS report, Spirit Airlines acknowledged the error and assured that the child was supervised at all times, but the internal investigation to determine the cause continues.
The Spirit Airlines mistake
The harrowing event was the boy’s first flying experience, leaving his family seeking answers and accountability from the airline.
Ramos’ frustration was palpable as he demanded a detailed explanation from Spirit Airlines about how his grandson was allowed to board the wrong flight and what steps are being taken to prevent such mistakes in the future.
Ramos later received a call from his grandson, informing him that he had landed several hours away from Fort Myers, WINK-TV reported. While the boy landed in Orlando, his luggage arrived in Fort Myers.
The mix-up, which occurred last Thursday, has naturally raised serious questions about protocols and supervision of unaccompanied minors on flights.
A Spirit Airlines spokesperson said the company apologized to the family, but Ramos said he wants answers.
“I want them to call me,” he told WINK-TV. “Let me know how my grandson ended up in Orlando. How did that happen? Did they take him off the plane? The stewardess, after mom handed him the documents, let him go alone? Did he get on the wrong plane by himself?”
