José Perdiz, the person who commands the intervention of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) by the Brazilian justice system, indicated this Monday that he intends to respond to the Brazilian justice system for the request for elections in the entity despite the claims made by FIFA about the interference that currently exists in the federation.
Perdiz, interim president of the CBF, came to office on December 7 after a court in Rio de Janeiro asked to hold new elections in the federation because former president Ednaldo Rodrigues rejected an agreement that favored the current president to run for office. uniquely.
“As the Brazilian Justice ruled, in a decision confirmed in all instances, (…) I must call elections within the given period, with the required transparency and integrity,” said Perdiz.
The Brazilian court of justice ordered the execution of new electoral elections in no more than 30 days to allow for a search for a real successor to Rodrigues’ position.
This resulted in FIFA expressing its concern about government interference in the CBF and especially the appointment of Perdiz, who also serves as president of the Court of Sports Justice.
Conmebol also subsequently joined FIFA’s requests and a couple of days later, last Sunday, they published a second minute in which they reiterated that if they continue with the process required by the court, the Confederation could be disaffiliated, which could leave to the Brazilian team without Copa América 2024 and World Cup 2026, also affecting the clubs that would not be able to compete in competitions such as the Copa Libertadores, the Copa Sudamericana and even the Brasileirao of the local tournament.
In said document, leaked by Brazilian media, they emphasized that, in accordance with their statutes, FIFA member associations “must manage their affairs independently and without the undue influence of any type of third party.”
FIFA and Conmebol also announced that they will send a joint mission to Brazil during the second week of January, between the 8th and 14th, to meet with the parties with the intention of “examining the situation” and “finding a solution”, respecting “the autonomy” of the CBF.
“FIFA and Conmebol want to strongly emphasize that, until that mission arrives, no decision is made that affects the CBF, including any election or call for an election,” they indicated in the letter.
In response, Perdiz said that he received the new letter and that he sees it as “a positive sign” that they support the electoral process.
However, he stated that it is his duty to “conduct this transitional stage by rigorously observing the legal frameworks with independence and impartiality, in line with the statute of the entity itself and of FIFA, with the sole objective of complying with the ruling of the Brazilian Justice.”
