Brazilian triathlete Luisa Baptista was seriously run over last Saturday by a motorcycle during cycling training on public roads and now this Monday she entered the intensive care unit of a hospital in Sao Paulo, where she was transferred by air from another health center. the region, medical sources reported.
The condition of Baptista, champion at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games, “requires continuous surveillance and specialized intensive care,” stated the latest medical bulletin from the Hospital de las Clínicas, in the city of Sao Paulo.
The 29-year-old triathlete receives “Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation” (ECMO) and is “being assisted by mechanical ventilation” due to the injuries she has in her lung.
Baptista also suffers multiple fractures as a result of the brutal run-over he suffered while training with a group of colleagues on a highway in the municipality of São Carlos, in the interior of São Paulo.
The driver of the motorcycle, who did not have an identification document according to the complaint, was also injured, but his condition was not serious.
The case is under investigation by the Civil Police.
Sources from the Brazilian Triathlon Confederation publicly indicated this Monday that Baptista is “stable” although delicate and with a reserved prognosis.
She was admitted with a serious condition that same Saturday at the Santa Casa de São Carlos clinic and this last morning she was transferred in an air unit with intensive care to the Hospital de las Clínicas, without any complications occurring during transport.
In addition to being a double gold medalist in Lima 2019, both in the individual and mixed categories, she represented Brazil in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and in the last Pan American Games, held this year in Santiago, Chile.
The Brazilian Sports Minister, André Luiz de Carvalho ‘Fufuca’, regretted the accident on his social networks and asked that the authorities investigate it thoroughly and, “if it is confirmed that they have violated the laws, that those responsible be punished.”
