2023 is about to end in sports and throughout the year there were several footballers who stood out individually and collectively. Winning titles and being key in their respective teams, that is why the International Federation of Football History and Statistics recently revealed a ranking with the best players of 2023.
The organization uses a formula to score the individual performances of each player. Such as goals, assists and games won, both with their clubs and with their respective national teams. With this criteria established, the IFFHS determined that Erling Haaland was the best player of 2023.
The Norwegian finished with 208 points and had a wide advantage over Kylian Mbappé, who finished in second place with 105 points. A little further down, and with 85 points, Argentine star Lionel Messi finished.
In 2023 Haaland finished with 50 goals scored. He being the third highest scorer of the entire year. He also comes from winning the Club World Cup and a few months before the Premier League and the Champions League.
While Kylian Mbappé with 52 goals in all of 2023, finished as the second top scorer of the year. As for the collective, his team only won the French Ligue 1 and took his team to the final of the World Cup, in which he finished as scorer.
Closing the podium is Lionel Messi. That scored 28 points. He won Ligue 1 with PSG and the Leagues Cup with Inter Miami.
The previous winner of this award was Messi himself. While in 2021 and 2020 it was won by the Polish Robert Lewandowski.
