In an incident the day after Christmas, a 5-year-old girl was killed in a fire that engulfed a multi-unit apartment building in Chicago.

According to WBBM-TV, a CBS news affiliate, the Chicago Fire Department responded to the fire early Tuesday after an ambulance crew spotted the fire while returning from a run.

The fire was reported around 7:15 a.m. local time on Marquette Road. Upon arrival, firefighters worked quickly to extinguish the flames, which had consumed much of the top-floor apartment.

Despite their efforts, a 5-year-old girl was found dead inside a bunk bed that was “virtually consumed” by the fire, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford, The Chicago Sun-Times cited.

The girl’s father, who attempted to rescue her, was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center with minor burns, illustrating the desperate and dangerous attempt to save his daughter.

The young woman’s loss has deeply affected not only her family, but also first responders and the community at large. Deputy Fire Commissioner Marc Ferman and the building’s owner, Elliott Williams, mentioned that her mother and two other siblings, an infant and a 6-year-old boy, also resided in the apartment.

The emotional toll of this incident was evident in the eyes of first responders, as Ferman noted, highlighting the profound impact such tragedies have on everyone involved, according to The Sun.

A memorial has begun to form outside the charred remains of the apartment, as the community gathers to mourn the young life lost and support the grieving family.

The Chicago Fire Department has identified “careless use of smoking materials” as the cause of the fire. Initially, there was speculation about a child playing with a lighter, leading officials to emphasize the importance of monitoring children and educating them about the dangers of playing with matches or lighters.

The community’s response, from the quick action of first responders to the creation of a memorial, reflects the deep sadness and solidarity at such a loss.

As investigations continue and details emerge, this incident underscores the importance of cautious behavior, particularly with smoking materials, and the crucial need for fire safety education to protect the most vulnerable.
