Benicia, California-based BlendJet Inc. has issued a recall for about 4.8 million of its “BlendJet 2” portable blenders after receiving multiple reports that the products caused injuries and property damage.

Blenders, sold at major retailers such as Costco, Target and Walmart, have been linked to cases of blades breaking, overheating and even catching fire.

Additionally, failures of those products resulted in property damage claims of approximately $150,000, according to a notice published Thursday by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Details of incidents with the BlendJet 2 blender

The Consumer Product Safety Commission notice reveals that BlendJet has received 329 reports that the blender blades broke during use and 17 additional reports that the product overheated or caught fire.

These incidents have resulted in property damage claims worth approximately the aforementioned $150,000; Additionally, there have been 49 reports of minor burns and one laceration.

Despite these alarming numbers, BlendJet notes that none of the incidents resulted in serious injuries or major property damage, in a statement on the company’s site.

BlendJet Response and Consumer Safety Measures

In response to these incidents, BlendJet has updated the base of the BlendJet 2, featuring thicker blades and an improved electrical configuration. These updates, implemented months ago, aim to improve the security and reliability of the product.

Consumers were urged to stop using the recalled blenders immediately and contact BlendJet for a free base unit replacement.

The recall process requires consumers to remove and cut the rubber seal from the base and provide photographic evidence to the company. BlendJet 2 blenders with serial numbers beginning with “5543” or higher are not included in the recall as they contain updated components.

This recall affects not only the 4.8 million blenders sold in the United States, but also an additional 117,000 sold in Canada.

The affected blenders were available in various colors and designs and were sold from October 2020 to November 2023.

Consumer Reports (CR), having raised safety concerns about these blenders since August, emphasized the importance of BlendJet spreading the word about this recall and offering refunds to those uncomfortable with receiving a replacement.

William Wallace, associate director of security policy at CR, emphasized the need for proactive measures to ensure consumer safety.

The recall of BlendJet 2 portable blenders is seen as a major consumer safety issue that highlights the potential dangers of the appliances.

With reports of broken blades, overheating, and fires, BlendJet has taken steps to rectify the issue and prevent further incidents, encouraging consumers who own affected products to participate in the recall and replacement process to protect themselves and his property.
