Families with SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) food stamps will receive between $291 and $1,751 in 2024 depending on the number of members in the household.

The monthly amount per family is determined by multiplying your household’s monthly net income by 0.3 and subtracting the result from the maximum monthly allowance for your household size, indicates an entry from the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) on the page United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) website.

Maximum allocations increased for 48 states, Washington, DC, Alaska, Guam and the Virgin Islands.

Hawaii is the only location with a reduction in the maximum amount. A family of four will benefit from a maximum payment of $1,759.

Below is the maximum amount of SNAP in 48 states and Washington, DC for the fiscal year that began in October 2023 and ends in September 2024:

  • Household with 1 member: $291
  • Household with 2 members: $535
  • Household with 3 members: $766
  • Household with 4 members: $973
  • Household with 5 members: $1,155
  • Household with 6 members: $1,386
  • Household with 7 members: $1,532
  • Household with 8 members: $1,751
  • Each additional person: $219

SNAP Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for food assistance funds, the household must meet certain requirements.

For example, in most cases, your household must meet gross and net income limits.

“If the state (SNAP) agency determines that you are eligible to receive SNAP benefits, you will receive the benefits applicable to the date you submitted your application,” they explain from the USDA website.

You must apply for program funds in the state in which you reside. “Because each state has a different form and process for applying, a household member must contact the state agency directly to complete the process,” they add from the USDA.

You can contact your state agency by visiting your local SNAP office, the state website, or calling the special toll-free SNAP information line.

“Some states have online applications that can be completed from the state agency’s website,” they specify.

In most cases, once you submit the application, your state agency or local SNAP office will process it and send you a notification telling you whether you are eligible or not within 30 days.

Within that time period, the applicant must complete an eligibility interview and submit proof of the information they have provided.

The interview is carried out by telephone or in person. It should be noted that you may be eligible to receive funds within 7 days from the date of application if you meet certain requirements.
