The New York Mets are committed to continuing to improve their starting staff and for that reason the leadership led by Steve Cohen and David Stearns would be interested in acquiring the services of pitcher Brandon Woodruff, currently in free agency.
According to one of the New York Mets’ most reliable sources, Andy Martino of SNY, the currency would be among the candidates to acquire Woodruff’s services, but although there is interest so far there is no principle of agreement between both parties.
The right-hander, who has just spent seven years in the Milwaukee Brewers, his only team to date in the Major Leagues, has been one of the most consistent pitchers in the National League in recent years, although in 2023 he suffered several injuries that cut his performance short. .
In just 11 starts last season, Woodruff finished with a 5-1 record and a low ERA of 2.28, striking out 74 opponents and walking 15, for a WHIP of 0.82, one of the best in the league, while in 2022 had the best campaign of his career with 13 wins and four losses.
However, not everything is perfect for the Mets’ aspirations. According to additional reports, Woodruff’s 2024 season hangs in the balance after undergoing surgery on his throwing shoulder, which could also explain the lack of offers for the pitcher who is approaching his 31st birthday.
In the event of an agreement, Woodruff probably hopes to agree for two seasons with the Metros and part of the success of the transaction will be in the relationship that the pitcher has with Stearns, with whom he shared in Milwaukee when he was general manager in the Brewers.
If his signature is confirmed and if he is able to launch in 2024, Woodruff would form a rotation led by Japanese star Kodai Senga along with another recent addition to the Queens team for the coming season: Sean Manaea.
