The Pentagon this Wednesday added more than 20 companies, including technology and telecommunications companies, to a list that identifies entities for collaborating with the Chinese Armed Forces.
The companies, the Department of Defense said in a statement, will become part of the list of “Chinese military companies” that operate “directly or indirectly in the United States.”
According to the Pentagon, the Chinese government is carrying out a “civil-military” fusion strategy to modernize its Armed Forces by purchasing “advanced technology” from Chinese companies, universities and research programs “that appear to be entities.” civilians.”
The companies that were added to the list today, including Megvii, dedicated to Artificial Intelligence, the data analysis company Global Tone Communication and the facial recognition software developer CloudWalk Technology, would be part of this “merger.”
The Department of Defense’s decision to add the companies to this list comes amid the Joe Biden Administration’s efforts to prevent the Chinese government from acquiring or having access to technology developed by American individuals or companies.
In August last year, Biden signed an executive order that imposed limits on US investments in certain Chinese technology companies, citing threats to US national security.
Hacker network dismantled
This comes on the same day that US authorities announced the dismantling of a hacking network allegedly linked to the Chinese government and aimed at spying on “critical infrastructure” in the United States and other countries.
“Chinese hackers are targeting critical American civilian infrastructure, positioning themselves to cause real harm to American citizens and communities in the event of conflict,” said FBI Director Christopher Wray.
Wray warned that “Chinese hackers are positioning themselves in American infrastructure in preparation to wreak real-world havoc and damage if China decides the time has come to strike.”
In a statement, the US Department of Justice detailed that it dismantled hundreds of routers installed in the United States hijacked by hackers serving the Chinese government.
“The United States will continue to dismantle malicious cyber operations – including those sponsored by foreign governments – that undermine the security of the American people,” said Attorney General Merrick Garland.
